Chapter 14

Remember the Time

Jett held the silent phone in her hand. For a while she didn’t move, hardly breathed. Finally she tapped her phone, went to a search engine, and typed in the name she told Chantel she’d forgotten. The name of a man she could never forget even if she tried. The man who, when told he had a child coming, denied even knowing her, let alone having sex. The man who’d threatened her to keep her mouth shut or else. Her first heartthrob. Her first heartbreak.

King Richardson.

The internet was full of news about him—the prolific litigator, the successful attorney. And running for mayor? Wow.

Jett smiled as bittersweet memories flowed into her mind. King always was a smooth talker. It didn’t surprise Jett that he’d made a career out of running his mouth. She was almost certain that given his family tree he wasn’t hurting for money. But life was full of surprises. Anything could happen. A part of her had hoped the family’s fortunes had changed. That the mighty Richardsons had been knocked off their high, haughty horse. She put in the names of his mom and dad, King, Jr. and Millicent. It appeared they were still alive and thriving, still upstanding members of high society, though King had retired as a judge. There was a sister, too. What was her name? Jett couldn’t remember but was almost certain she’d be married with children by now. Along with his law firm and several professional memberships, including the Boule, King was on the board of his family’s foundation, one created to reduce recidivism among teenage boys. He had a wife and three children—two sons and a daughter.

Two daughters, asshole. So make that four children.

Jett tossed down the phone and cursed Chantel for unlocking a door she’d bolted decades ago. The dam had been broken. Memories flooded in. Those years as a preteen and then teenager, when she thought she was the sun the earth revolved around and her mama was “old” and didn’t know nothing. She and Anna fought almost every day. She rebelled often in a defiance that included the boys her mother tried to tell her were up to no good. Boys like King, who was twenty-six or seven when they had sex. Technically, he’d been guilty of statutory rape. Also, technically, she’d wanted to be with him. Whether or not she’d been an unwilling participant could have been hotly debated. Jett wasn’t at all sure her story would have held up in court.

Jett hadn’t thought about that night in decades. Still, it came back as vividly as though it had only happened yesterday. King, driving his brand-new black Camaro, showing his California cousin how Kansas City got down. She’d met him a couple months earlier, when she and another fast girl, Yvette, had used fake IDs to go clubbing. Jett was hooked from the moment she saw him—tall, toned, fine as all get-out. He smiled and she was under his spell. They danced, and she was hooked.
